Description

Most carbon-based filters will initially reduce fluoride. However, they typically experience a drastic decline in their effectiveness, usually within the first 50 gallons (200 liters) or less.

Berkey® designed a separate, more durable and long lasting solution for fluoride reduction by creating the replaceable Berkey® PF-2™ Fluoride Reduction Elements (optional and sold separately). These post-filters can reliably remove fluoride from water that the Black Berkey® purification elements begin to miss after extended use.

PF-2 Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Filters adsorb the following unwanted elements found in drinking water:

  •       Fluoride: Sodium Fluoride, Sodium Fluorosilicate, Fluorosilicic Acid (aka Hydrofluorosilic Acid)
  •       Arsenic V and pre-oxidized Arsenic III
  •       Other residual heavy metal ions

NOTE: The PF-2 Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Filters are sold in a set of 2 elements.

PF-2 Filter Life

PF-2 Fluoride Reduction Elements have a lifespan of up to 1,000 gallons. As such, you will have to change the fluoride filters more often than the Black Berkey elements.  To make sure your Berkey is working optimally, it is a good idea to change the fluoride post-filters once a year, and  to perform a thorough maintenance of your Berkey system at the same time. (See User Instructions)

The Black Berkey® Purification Elements’ job is to remove a wide variety of potential contaminants, while the Berkey® PF-2™ Post Filters’ job is to remove Fluoride and Arsenic that will not be effectively removed by the Black Berkey® Purification Elements over time.

Actual filtration capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water as well as water pH.  The PF-2 filters will work best at pH between 5 and 7. High levels of arsenic and heavy metals in the source water may reduce the capacity and efficiency of these elements.
